Coordinator
for Middleton and Nearby Villages, Sylvia McGregor
In
1953 Sylvia left her sunny Jamaica to pursue a nursing career in England,
and went on to become a midwife.
While
serving as a Community Midwife she was elected Chairman of the London
City East Branch of the Royal College of Midwives for 3 years.
After a period of 19 years she retired from midwifery to promote
Primary Health Care when, as a Clinical Practitioner, she established
the first 'Well Woman" Clinic of the area in East London.
In
parallel, as one of five founder members of the Nurses Association
of Jamaica (NAJ)UK, she served as President for 5 years.
Then she retired to Bognor Regis where she joined
the Citizens' Advice Bureau, and was active in various capacities
including advisory sessions for inmates at HM Ford Prison. She
was referred to Police Headquarters at Lewes to join their Team of
Lay Visitors, visiting custodial premises unannounced to asses
standards. She resigned after 6½ years.
After a short rest, then came U3A!
She has a family of 3 sons and 5 grandchildren,
and is now a great grandmother to a little boy.
