Chair & Membership Secretary, Pauline Chappell
During
the 1950's Pauline trained in nursing at the London Hospital. Then
she
married, had 4 children, and worked, together with her husband, in the licensed trade
for 12 years. They opened the Schooner Inn's
first steak house in Sussex in 1967 and became Schooner's
trouble-shooter,
sorting out 4 other Inns, and a training house as well.
Pauline
went back to nursing as a District Nurse from 1973-80, took 9 months
out to beachcomb with their motorcaravan in France, Spain and
Portugal. She then became Matron at Kenninghall for the next 15
years, which involved looking after 18 guests at
this Care Hotel for Multiple Sclerosis.
After
retirement she moved to Rustington, where her husband died 2 years
later. Over the past years she has built up a new life, of
which Arun U3A has been an important part. She is the Membership Secretary, also the Convenor for
the Theatre Club, Outings and Symphony Groups, and the Host for
Bridge. And she is delighted to be in the role of Chair for
this great organisation.
Pauline likes
to be busy, and her other retirement interests have included:
Secretary of the Trefoil Guild for 4 years; she also enjoys doing
all their catering and organising the outings.
Committee Member and Holiday Organiser for the Arun Valley National
Trust. They have holidayed at the Eden Project, Normandy, Iron
Bridge, Durham and Dublin.
Volunteer for Chichester Theatre.
She gives
lifts to people who don't drive, taking them to hospital, meetings,
shopping and the doctor.
And she
is
kept busy with her 10 lovely grandchildren!
